Stopping our broadcast…

Our mission here on the Brickhouse team is to quickly develop product ideas that can add value to Yahoo! as a whole. To do this effectively we constantly evaluate our early-stage products and sometimes have to make the hard decision to move on, in order to continue exploring new territory and developing new products.

So it is with great sadness that I share the news that Yahoo! Live, a Brickhouse project in social broadcasting will be going off the air on 3 December 2008. We’d like to thank everyone who has participated. Without all of you, Y!Live would not have built the strong community that it has. It has been really interesting (and entertaining) to see all of the ways broadcasters have used Live, developing it into a place for all sorts of social interactions.

We hope you can join us in our town hall this Wednesday to toast Yahoo! Live.  For more out of Brickhouse, check out the recently launched fire eagle, and keep an eye on next* to stay posted on what we’re doing next.

Total shame to see this go. I know Y! will find a way to intelligently integrate this incredible tech into other products and services. Sad to see it go, however. Good luck, Brickhouse.

I look forward to the next project!

  8. 8 Alexander Schek Nov 3rd, 2008 at 2:08 pm

What a sad news, Yahoo! Live was by far the best streaming service around.. so well made… And also, one of the few in-house products that Yahoo! had… Well, thanks for the ride.

  9. 9 aaron svabik Nov 3rd, 2008 at 2:18 pm

are you aware of any similar (free or fee based) services like yahoo live?

  10. 10 Bonnie Cha Nov 3rd, 2008 at 2:34 pm

Hi, I must say that it is a shame.

I was wondering if Mr. Chips from FayerWayer can solve this in someway, maybe by broadcasting his entertaining life or his speeches about being an apple fanboy.

  11. 11 Andrew Mager Nov 3rd, 2008 at 2:37 pm

And I had the best username. I wish you could bring it back :)

  12. 12 Dav Glass Nov 3rd, 2008 at 2:49 pm

Wow, that is truly sad news. I use it often to chat with my hearing impaired mother. The broadcasts and UI is so much better then over IM.

  13. 13 Napolux Nov 3rd, 2008 at 3:11 pm

I’m really sad about this. Yahoo Live is really a great service.

  14. 14 randy Nov 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

  15. 15 jERRY jARVIS Nov 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Its like you are breaking my heart with this news. I have been able to see my family every day because Y Live has made that possible not only for mr but for the rest of the guys here in Iraq. Please wait until we get home.

  16. 16 Ricky Montalvo Nov 3rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Noooooooooooo! I’m going to have JT the Bigga Figga call Jerry asap.

  17. 17 NP Nov 3rd, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Sad to see this go, Y!L has the best live video UI by far. So :( that it’s going to be gone.

  18. 18 Kimble Nov 3rd, 2008 at 4:40 pm

That’s sad. I really wanted to see this niche expanded upon. The next big feature would have been live streaming from a mobile phone video camera. Imagine being able to broadcast any event live anywhere.

  19. 19 ThePete Nov 3rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Hmmm, do we get an actual reason for this? I never became a big user of Y!Live, but I was considering using it to cover the election tomorrow. Ah well…

  20. 20 json Nov 3rd, 2008 at 5:29 pm

It seams the economy and not enough users has caused ylive to shutdown. This is sad. It’s a great(the best of video services).

  21. 21 angerfistttttt Nov 3rd, 2008 at 6:48 pm

YLive is awesome, it’s sad to see it go.

  22. 22 moneyhouse Nov 3rd, 2008 at 8:18 pm

HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO PAY TO BUY YAHOO LIVE? im arranging some meetings to see if my family will buy it.

  23. 23 Kyle Johnson Nov 3rd, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Oh no way! This can’t beeeee. I haven’t really gotten to use this service as much as I’ve wanted to. So far, it’s been more of a private friend-to-friend way of chatting. This is the *best* option available right now for video broadcast and multi-user video and voice chat. It has become an integral part of my online life.

I signed that petition. I doubt it’ll do any good, but this is crap. At least release the source or something…

  24. 24 nevada344 Nov 3rd, 2008 at 9:34 pm

I wouldn’t want to spam this because I believe that would put off more people than help but there’s been some pretty interesting comments over the night and I’d like to share them with you.

I’m not advertising anything. If you believe y.live should stay on sign in in the petition.

    http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?yahoolyf&1

    37. JoeJoe This could be a huge marketing potential, yahoo. You should reconsider and maybe put it out there for a bit longer. I’m sure it’s not a huge dent in your pockets, and maybe businesses can use this to maximize their potential as well!
    36. ir_pears I would pay $5 month for this service

    49. meester I made bobpopo.com, I also help moderate a variety of other Y! Live channels. This came out of the blue. Why can’t Yahoo just keep this going in the back, it’s not like they have to invest any time into it. They have the money for the upkeep and just hire a few guys for the administration as a whole.

    59. Satter Been here since March, and made many friends. Would be a shame for this experiment to end.

    64. mini_milf_anonsoup_ssg_serialcoder I will miss the all-star cast of Mini, MILF, AnonSoup, Serial Coder. And most of all who can forget the wonderfully intertaining SSG!! BobPopo and Digga Dame will be missed for sure!!

    52. Tony Mann This is a great application!!! WHY KILL IT!?
    51. Brownies Sadly I made the following video a week before this announcement, and now its standing as the “Remember the Good Ol Days” video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm6oyL3OV3c Hope it stays up =)

Don’t forget to check out the cool video featuring some of y.lives funniest if not greatest moments. :P I’m not the author of the video! From: browniesONytube

  25. 25 Crab the Crab Nov 4th, 2008 at 1:47 am

The app never worked correctly, it was riddled with bugs, Yahoo removed functionality from the app, indeed their approach always seemed to be one of “let’s fix what isn’t broken”.

Yahoo is hurting badly for money and may not survive as a company to see 2010. Wave goodbye to the purple Y as it slips beneath the waves. Adios, Yahoo.

  26. 26 coxy Nov 4th, 2008 at 2:18 am

Disappointing. I am awaiting delivery of a new laptop and one of my main uses for it was going to be using Y! Live. It was a nice idea done well, just not pushed in the the right places or incorporated as part of the mass product offering from Yahoo!

Where do I go instead for something like this? Recommendations please?

  27. 27 Dario Salvelli Nov 4th, 2008 at 3:00 am

    I don’t understand your choice…

  29. 29 Saucey_Mofo Nov 4th, 2008 at 6:47 am

Wow after all this time , its been a great year on ylive!

  30. 30 Guille Nov 4th, 2008 at 8:56 am

This is so sad, i never used this service, but i wanted to use it sometime. Y! Please make a new service like this.
I love some services of Y!, my favorite is Y! Answers.

Ja ja, you’re right Bonnie! Mr. Chips you are an Apple Fanboy ;)

This really is garbage that your gonna trash this website. I mean seriously, you have a successful creation here and the ONLY reason it didn’t work is due to the GENIOUS failure of a team that forgets to PROMOTE THEIR F***ING PRODUCT! Seriously, you’re making a mistake by killing this site, but so be it - you suck.

Wow, it is gonna to stop a lot of deaf participants in this. It is like ripping our deaf community off.

  36. 36 LaRonda Nov 4th, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Ah wow! I must say this is such a loss! Especially for the Deaf Community who seemed to make our niche here. Having the visual mode to use sign language was tops! Where else can we find that? Really bummed to hear of the closure. Anything like it in the plans ahead?

    ~ LaRonda

  37. 37 Mikel Nov 4th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

This is very sad. We wanted to use Y!Live in future for broadcasting media events, workshops and Q&A’s among our Film and Theater Community! Your service fitted very well to our needs.

So, now we have to look around or take the bitter pill to build up our own service…

    Good luck!

  41. 41 Mohammad Nov 5th, 2008 at 8:48 am

Yahoo! is about to die quickly.

  42. 42 Zolive Nov 5th, 2008 at 10:20 am

Hey Yahoo! developers ! Are you able to see beyond what you create and destroy ? Haven’t you noticed that you created a brand new way to communicate and that you’re about to abort it ?

Do you think Graham Bell would have acted the same way ?

Now this is a call to every developers on the world : launch a website that allows everyone to videochat with anyone, put ads all around the world and just be famous ! If Yahoo! get rids of this wonderful idea, I’m sure there’s a lot of people interested in developing it !

  43. 43 Hilary Nov 5th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

I’m so heartbroken over this…I am in a support group of ex-cult members all over the world. We’ve grown very close through our message forum and just a few months ago started using Y!Live so that we could actually see and talk to each other. We refer to our chatting group as family. We’re looking for another service, but haven’t found any that offer the right features and allow us to see more than one person at a time. I’ll be signing the petition, and a bunch of my “family” will, too!

  44. 44 Robert Alspaugh Nov 5th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

    This is very sad news.
Such a great service being tossed out like moldy bacon.

Well y’know what, I didn’t even know about it until a few days ago and I know that other people are just starting to use it so tossing it would be a very premature thing to do.

Give it a few months and maybe you’ll see that the YL community will grow large enough to keep it.

  45. 45 Robert Nov 5th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

I have been using this UI for a few months now for the Saturday morning meditations I run for my podcast listeners. I have around 4000 subscribers and they will really miss using Yahoo! Live. Will you be making the code available? If so I would love to have it! You guys did a great job in this and it’s by far my favorite video streaming app…it will be missed.

    Thanks

    Robert

  48. 48 Aski Nov 6th, 2008 at 3:54 am

    No !!!!!

Il n’existe aucun équivalent de yahoo live, comment pouvez vous prendre la décision de le fermer, il suffirait simplement d’en faire d’avantage la promotion pour que ce site ai le succès attendu !!!

There is no equivalent of yahoo live, how can you decide to stopping yahoo live, simply to do more promotion for this site the success I expected!

This really is some bad news… this service has some nice “social” aspects, that i like more than in the other webcam applications :\
I ttly would like to see that here going live - maybe after a few more bugfixes
    *sad*

  57. 57 nevada344 Nov 7th, 2008 at 3:45 am

I see that my previous comment is awaiting moderation. Still what matters to me is that you read this even if it’s not posted.

What I would like to achieve with these posts is to give you some very real reasons to keep yahoo live on-line. I understand that it’s a matter of economy, that it was a test-project and it was never meant to last forever.

What I put my faith into is that the personal input in the comments of your users would convince you to reconsider shutting down this project. Perhaps even update it and if such is the case as some users have expressed you could also create a paid account option in order to stimulate further development of the web-site.

    158. kathy I do want stay keep live.yahoo for deaf we have love chat-room for deaf . please stay live.yahooo thank you
    157. 45hot please remember me 45hot in deafvideo.tv
    156. Scott Vela We need this live chat room to stay because we, deaf people, enjoy video chat with out ASL signs which is very important to us. We are unable to use voice chats but video chat are far more important for us, deafies. Hope you will keep this alive. If this shut down where else we can go in live chat room with video? This yahoo live chat has good streaming speed for us to be able to read each other sign lanuages clearly than lagging video chat servers.
    155. Jovita Gonzalez please keep ylive for deaf use commution with sign language keep it YLive :D 154. Mikel Hey….. We (Deafies) all want this live.yahoo.com stays open because we all need to communicate on webcam easier that way rather go back to regular chatroom without webcams present….. That’s why we want this chatroom stays open all the times that means no more shuts down at all………

  64. 64 NRG808 Nov 9th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I am giving up with Yahoo’s services. You just get used to something and they change it or remove it. I have already removed Yahoo Messenger and Widgets, and moved my photographs from Flickr to Photobucket. Enjoy your fail, Yahoo.

  65. 65 Megan Nov 9th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

omgezzz this pissed me off so bad all my friends that live far away we all come here to connect and “hang out” we have had so many funnnn memories on here. if you take it down thhen yahoo will be dead

  66. 66 Termy Nov 10th, 2008 at 12:41 pm

I wonder how much would Ylive.com Code would cost any o Ylive staff could contract me? i would pay for it straight crash or even buy the site and change the name or keep it Ylive

  67. 67 Bill Creata Nov 10th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

It is vital to keep Y-Live on to ensure and preserve freedom and liberty for all people. Look at wenli and how many viewers go there. The protest on Taiwan would never have been known with out Y-live. And what was the protest about? Free speech was one issue. Will Yahoo be like China and take one of the best free speech sites off the air? What better soap box to reach large audiences than y-live? It failed because you didn’t promote it. Please, give it time to grow. I worked in radio long enough to understand how this works and how to find the advertisers to pay for it. You got a good thing here. Be patient. Amazon.com calculated 10 years before they would turn a profit but this is about more than money. Think of Y-Live as a public service and a scalable channel to cover world events, news and information. (Get those servers and hubs ready) I fear we are entering an age of filtered and regulated internet. People from the media use Y-Live to look for breaking news. If need be I will go out and promote it myself. Just make sure it stays on first.

  68. 68 Marlon Smith Nov 10th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

This is unfortionate. Yahoo Live’s problem is - MARKETING.

Y! Live was not well advertised or advertised at all - most people didn’t know it existed!!!!

Most everyone I know (and I know alot of internet savvy people) never even knew that Yahoo had a Live webchat service!

If Yahoo would have better ADVERTISED & MARKETED Y! Live… and let people know of its existence Y! Live would have had a much larger user base like the other web services, simply because it’s interface & stream

  69. 69 Prraful Nov 12th, 2008 at 2:08 am

    Why offline…

    hey yahoo team….

i would wish to purchase this service to keep it alive!

Like others, I am saddened by the news of shutting down the system. Thank you for the opportunity to broadcast live images of the Moon, Planets, galaxies and other celestial wonders from my backyard observatory. I will continue to broadcast on clear. night till the plug is pulled. Clear skies everyone. http://www.wondersofastronomy.com

  71. 71 stupid Nov 14th, 2008 at 11:09 am

yahoo is stupid to discontinue this service, just as google is implementing a similiar service.

yahoo didn’t market this product very well - most people didn’t know it existed

  72. 72 MTG Xerxes Nov 14th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Man, really? What for? Is it a money issue? Surely you can get advertisement banners on the sides or something to help pay, and I’m pretty sure most broadcasters would be willing to donate if it meant to keep the site active.

Yahoo LIVE is one of the few Yahoo tools that really shine, a lot of people depend on it and use it faithfully, by taking this away you’re not only hindering countless social lives but I know several people will be moving to other companies entirely. Many people will have no use for Yahoo anything if Live is gone, surely there is something you can work out.

  73. 73 wendy Nov 15th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Please think of the people overseas using this to communicate with their families and also the deaf. This is such a great service!

  74. 74 Futiland Nov 16th, 2008 at 9:05 am

Quelle mauvaise nouvelle !!! Ne fermez pas s’il vous plait…

  75. 75 Znort Nov 17th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    Shame.
Well done on a good prototype.
I’m interested in the reasons why it was cancelled - i’m guessing it cost a bunch of bandwidth and some cost cutting axe wielder deemed it necessary in this current economic climate.
I hope Yahoo is retaining Brickhouse.
I was lucky enough to be involved in a similar scenario as you guys - bulding apps born from innovation and disruption for a major (and old in internet time) player, but completely off-set from them so we had room to think, move and build prototypes in weeks that a standard Product Requirements Document would take 6 months to realise.
While many of our projects never got off the ground, we did make some that fundamentally changed the experience for the users that the site serviced.
I hope that this one can evolve into something more permanent.

  76. 76 Stephanie Nov 18th, 2008 at 8:51 am

I am so sad to see this site go. The only other video chats sites I can find that come even a little close are full of porno chats. I use this site to chat with family and friends. Does anyone know of a site that can be used as an alternate?

  80. 80 Mat Beinke Nov 20th, 2008 at 9:49 am

Yahoo, drop me a note. I think someone missed the boat on this unless you have another way to offer a similar service. If the programming and technology isn’t needed anymore, I would love to sit down with some of your investors and explain how this could be worth more than ANY other service you offer. The potential is mindboggling. This IS a revenue generating engine that will make somebody very wealthy. If you don’t want it, I’ll take it.

Why the hell are you closing Yahoo! Live? Dumb idea and another poor action by Yahoo!

  82. 82 John Nov 22nd, 2008 at 10:47 am

Is there anywhere else like this to stream live webcams?

  83. 83 Kenny Nov 22nd, 2008 at 9:05 pm

This is why Yahoo will always suck. Thanks for shutting down the best thing going for yahoo.

  84. 84 Devon Nov 23rd, 2008 at 10:02 am

WRONG ANSWER! Y!Live is THE BEST streaming broadcast video site ON THE INTERNET. Please reconsider your decision to stop broadcast!

Is this the reason I cannot access Yahoo at all? It sent my friend 300 viruses and then she couldn’t gain access to yahoo. It just showed up as an error, and so I thought I should give it a try. Nothing. Just a web error shows up. Does this mean my Yahoo account is being shut down? Email wise.

  87. 87 Michael Mills Nov 26th, 2008 at 12:30 pm

    Hey Keith and gang,

Sorry to see this being shut down. Heroic effort. Great implementation. It was fun to be there at the beginning. I guess no one could figure out how to monetize?

Good luck on the next one.

    220. Tim Koepke - SkyDancer.Observatory I’m only one person in a group of astronomers that broadcast live for education of young and old. YLive has been an intregal (sp) part of this and has been used by many of us for some time. Before you “pull the plug” on YLive please consider this: YLive has been, is, and can be a great tool that can be used by educators around the world for the kids that will one day be leading the world. It’s live in the here and now. It has the ability to help bring together old, present, and new ideas and information that can shape the minds of the future. Ylive has the ability to be used by all formats wether it is PC, MAC, Linix, etc. and no one else has this ability on the level that Ylive has now. Instead of scrapping the system, use the current platform to develop and shape a future platform that can be used by educators in the same way. Please help us to help shape the future. The kids deserve it, and so do we. Thanks, Tim Koepke.

    1. Natsumi Tsuiji

I do not know if that is enough or what is ‘enough’ for that matter.

Nevertheless all these people beg you the yahoo live team to reconsider and keep live.yahoo.com as a side project, perhaps even reconsider some of your policies on blacklisting channels which in my humble opinion is the reason for your failure to market the people who truly made an effort to create an interesting product through their vblogs. As an example I’d like to put up the channel /HUHNILASTCHAN which in the past few days broadcsted live through Dreamhack and all of it’s majour events. That channel was permanently blacklisted a while back.

So to come to a conclusion if you, the ylive team would like to reconsider taking down the project, those 260 people will be behind you and that is a great starting point for a project that’s coming out of beta.

We all sincerely hope that you change your mind.

Y Live was awesome from day 1. I’ve been through the changes in participants and it had a good run through all of its members. Perhaps a little advertising would go a long way next time. Such a shame to let a good service go before it even had a real chance.

This boardcasting website allowed you to EMBED your live webcam on another websites and let others see your live webcam. I admit I never placed my self in the yahoo live public listings. But the EMBED option was extremely useful to place in any other websites you wanted and I will miss that part alot! I know it be too much to ask for the yahoo live broadcast to come back on air. I’d really like them to come back too! But can yahoo messenger webcams have a EMBED option? To the people who use the yahoo messenger webcam, a EMBED option would be very conveintant. I really am gonna miss live yahoo. But if yahoo messenger webcam could just get that EMBED option, that would be amazing news!
