Chat control freaks, unite!

Earlier this week, we rolled out a new feature which enables you as a broadcaster to temporarily turn off your chat room. Why would you do this? Well, as some of you more popular broadcasters know, things can get a little crazy when there are hundreds of people trying to talk at once. This feature will enable you to at least broadcast in peace momentarily while things settle down a bit. All you need to do is click the “Disable Chat” button in your Broadcast Control Panel, then click it again once you want to restart your chat. We’re working on additional features which will give you more granular control of your channel, but we thought you’d appreciate this tool in the meantime. As always, we’d love your feedback, so please leave your comments on this blog.

Wanted to also give a shout out to the Y! Live engineering team (you can see the team roster over in the right column of this blog). They’ve been working hard on some major nuts and bolts improvements to our streaming and communications infrastructure. Most of this is behind-the-scenes work you don’t see, but it’s critical stuff that will help keep the site running smoothly as it grows. We’re looking forward to soon being able to shift our focus to bringing you some brand new features which you can actually touch and feel and teach new tricks and stuff - so stay tuned!

Yes,you guys might be out of the lime light, but the improvements are felt and talked about, and yes of course sly would be the first to use it!Well thanks again for a wonderful way to meet and stay in contact with friends.I have been using yahoo live to post and say hi to friends on my bicycle trip down the west coast. And so far have been able to broadcast from san fran, half moon bay, santa cruz, and now big sur ca.Along the way picking up people on my channel that want to hear about my adventures and the like, yes somtimes this place gets out of control, but the theory is the greatest thing ever, thanks abaloneshaman/emmaus

That’s nice, but I would still like to see the ability to assign mods or ops to help control the chat because if there are like 100 poeple in the room, I can’t control everything!

Features I’d really like to see Yahoo Live have:
    * Ability to record a session (and an archive where people can view the recordings)
    * Ability to toggle the video on/off without stopping broadcast. My camera software allows me to blank the video, or put up a picture, for times I need to do something that I don’t want to broadcast. Not everyone has this software so it would be nice if it was a feature.
    * Option to allow anonymous guests to chat. I realize the benefit of making guests sign up for Yahoo, but it would be nice if you had the option of allowing them to chat without creating an account, or revealing who they are.
    * Ability to set a channel as private or password protected
    * Text overlays? Corner bugs? Text ticker?
    * Moderated chat, where you can turn off everyones ability to chat, except the person(s) that you specify.
    * Ability to allow audio passthru of selected viewers who are broadcasting
